Visual Expert uses a SQL Server instance to store project information.

This instance must be Microsoft SQL Server; Sybase SQL Server is not compatible with Visual Expert.

You can use the free instances of SQL Server LocalDB or Express. We do recommend using a standard or above version of SQL Server. A standard or above version increases performance in project analysis, documentation generation and macro execution as well as storage space for larger projects. 

For Server installations, SQL Server Express or above must be used (SQL Server LocalDB will not work). When multiple users are connected to Visual Expert at once, a standard or above version of SQL Server is highly recommended.
